MoMA PS1 is one of the oldest and largest nonprofit contemporary art institutions in the United States. An exhibition space rather than a collecting institution, MoMA PS1 devotes its energy and resources to displaying the most experimental art in the world. A catalyst and an advocate for new ideas, discourses, and trends in contemporary art, MoMA PS1 actively pursues emerging artists, new genres, and adventurous new work by recognized artists in an effort to support innovation in contemporary art. MoMA PS1 achieves this mission by presenting its diverse program to a broad audience in a unique and welcoming environment in which visitors can discover and explore the work of contemporary artists. Exhibitions at MoMA PS1 include artists’ retrospectives, site-specific installations, historical surveys, arts from across the United States and the world, and a full schedule of music and performance programming.

MoMA PS1 was founded in 1971 by Alanna Heiss as the Institute for Art and Urban Resources Inc., an organization devoted to organizing exhibitions in underutilized and abandoned spaces across New York City. In 1976, it opened the first major exhibition in its permanent location in Long Island City, Queens, with the seminal Rooms exhibition. An invitation for artists to transform the building’s unique spaces, Rooms established the MoMA PS1 tradition of transforming the building’s spaces into site-specific art that continues today with long-term installations by James Turrell, Richard Serra, Lawrence Weiner, and others.

For the next twenty years, the building was used as studio, performance, and exhibition spaces, in support of artists from around the world. After a building-wide renovation, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center (now MoMA PS1) reopened in 1997, confirming its position as the leading contemporary art center in New York. True to the building’s history and form, the renovation preserved much of the original architecture as well as most of its unique classroom-sized galleries.

In 2000, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center became an affiliate of The Museum of Modern Art to extend the reach of both institutions, and combine MoMA PS1’s contemporary mission with MoMA’s strength as one of the greatest collecting museums of modern art. 2010 marks the completed merger of the two institutions and celebrates P.S.1’s new and exciting chapter as MoMA PS1.

A true artistic laboratory, MoMA PS1 aspires to maintain its diverse and innovative activities to continue to bring contemporary art to international audiences.

MoMA PS1

Papo Colo, performing his new, independent and rogue work,...

A post shared by MoMA PS1 (@momaps1) on May 23, 2016 at 7:15pm PDT

totally independent from his own performance but coinciding is The MoMA PS1 gallery presentation is organized by @klausbiesenbach, Director, MoMA PS1 and Chief Curator-at-Large, The Museum of Modern Art. Please do not miss him at work, Saturday’s from 4-6:00

The artist paddled a canoe upstream amidst the trash and debris of New York’s #BronxRiver.

An endurance-based performance, the work sought to highlight the river’s contamination by industrial pollutants. For Colo, the effort to fight against the natural movement of the water also functioned as a metaphor for the struggle of #PuertoRicans attempting to assert an economic and social identity in the context of Reagan-era politics.

Documentary footage of this work and "Superman 51” are included in Colo’s autobiographical film retrospective “La Diferencia,” 1986, which will be included in the show at #MoMA PS1.

Don’t forget that Papo Colo will be independently performing a new work entitled “The Cleaner” on the corner of 23rd Street and 10th Avenue each Saturday from May 21 to July 4, 2016, between 4pm and 6pm.

Papo Colo’s gallery presentation at MoMA PS1 will open on Sunday, May 22nd and is curated by @klausbiesenbach.
Your little ones can come live the fantasies portrayed in “From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler,” “Night at the Museum,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and “The Royal Tennenbaums.” The museum as a site of adventure, exploration and transformative encounters with art has captured the imaginations of generations of young readers and cinephiles.

They may not be able to sleepover, or touch most of the art of view, but will certainly enjoy romping around the earlier part of the evening as #NATM goes from 8:00 - midnight (past many bedtimes).

This Saturday night, join us to experience MoMA PS1 by moonlight. In addition to the 4 open exhibitions, there are the countless hidden treasures of permanent artworks tucked in obscure corners of the building.

Pictured here, a group of youngsters visit “Cao Fei.” One of the most innovative young artists to have emerged from China, Cao Fei creates multimedia projects that explore the experiences of young Chinese citizens as they develop strategies for overcoming and escaping the realities of a rapidly changing society. The interplay between fantasy and reality animates much of the artist’s work resulting in a range of technicolor worlds that collapse extreme versions of the everyday and the fantastical into one.

#NATM will take place Saturday, May 7th from 8:00 pm to midnight.

As an #fyi, the perfect antidote to rainy day blues is a visit to #MoMAPS1’s architectural and immersive new installation in our Duplex space. Pictured here is a tiny yet intriguing sliver of the larger installation.
Using found objects and industrial materials, Djordjadze draws on the visual language of architecture and functional design to create sculptural environments that foreground the lasting legacy of #Modernism while evoking the vernacular and folk traditions native to the Caucasus region in the Republic of Georgia.

For “Projects 103” Djordjadze draws her inspiration from a 12th century pharmacy located in the cave city of Vadzia, Georgia, pictured in a poster that had hung in her childhood bedroom and responds to the idiosyncratic architecture of the Duplex Gallery. Ultimately translating the historical ruin’s structural characteristics into a system of large-scale shelving units that draws on the forms of Minimalist sculpture and modular furniture design. She forsakes visual clarity to create a sculptural palimpsest, layering materials in, atop, and around the shelves until the construction resembles an excavation site.
On view through August 29, 2016. Organized by Paulina Pobocha (@paulinapobocha) Assistant Curator, Department of Painting and Sculpture, @themuseumofmodernart, with Margaret Aldredge (@maaglio) Curatorial Assistant, @momaps1.

Fear not though–the dome will return to our courtyard again this fall! Until then, get your dancing shoes ready for our summer music series, #WarmUp and the installation “Weaving the Courtyard” winning project of the Young Architects Program by @lazbent @asolizpaz.

Vivid pours of latex paint splash and pool across the draped surface of bedspreads in many of these remarkable works.

Sourced from thrift stores, the sheets that McMillian uses often bear price tags or traces of former owners, and their size alludes to the intimate encounter of bodies in bed. “I like that it’s a space for more than one person,” McMillian has remarked of his sheets, pointing to “the pleasures we have in bed like sleep, reading, sex.” Already laden with traces of personal and corporeal histories, this found bedding is transformed by the artist into works that engage the history of landscape painting. Using leftover paint from construction supply stores, McMillian responds to the absence of bodies in the history of landscape representation; his pours and splatters evoke what he describes as an “abject history of turmoil or the spillage of blood” that is often missing from the pastoral tradition.

Open tomorrow: “Rodney McMillian: Landscape Paintings” along with “Cao Fei” and “Projects 103: Thea Djordjadze.“

The exhibition is curated by Heidi Zuckerman of @aspenartmuseum and organized at #MoMAPS1 by#PeterEleey. #RodneyMcMillian is concurrently exhibiting @studiomuseum and @icaphiladelphia.
The 2016 Sunday Sessions commission by Matthew Lutz-Kinoy and Tobias Madison was an artistic homage to the work of Japanese avant-garde playwright and filmmaker Shūji Terayama, active from the mid 1960s until his untimely passing in 1983.

This rarely-seen performance embraced collaboration and communal creativity advocated by Terayama and his ‪#‎Tokyo‬-based company Tenjou Sajiki.

Lutz-Kinoy and Madison were joined by Berlin-based director Ariel Efraim Ashbel and two of his regular actors, Jessica Gadani and $hubi, the Tokyo-based performance artist Cobra, New York-based performer Ezra Azrieli Holzman, New York-based musicians Stefan Tcherepnin, Veit Laurent Kurz (Steit) and Taketo Shimada, San Antonio-based writer William Z Saunders, New York-based artists Leigha Mason, Elizabeth Orr, Jessie Stead and Hanna Törnudd, fashion label ECKHAUS LATTA, and New York-based child performers Charlotte Beede, Maeve Press, Amaya Press, Miles Sherr-Garcia and Bette Sherr-Garcia.
